Do you need a recommended equine dentist in Reigate?

Regular dental care is a vital and integral aspect of your horse or pony's primary healthcare. It is recommended to have your horse's teeth examined at least once a year. Certain horses, especially those with dental abnormalities, may require more frequent dental work.

Our mobile horse vets provide routine dentistry services directly at your location, offering sedation, pain relief, and local anaesthesia as needed during dental procedures. While not always mandatory, when deemed appropriate, these measures enable a more thorough examination and treatment, minimising any discomfort or stress to the horse. Additionally, it contributes to the safety of the horse, the veterinarian, and the handler.

Our horse vets can also provide oroscopy. Oroscopy serves as a valuable complement to dental examinations and procedures. It enables veterinarians and clients to observe dental pathology that may not be readily visible through a simple visual inspection using a head torch in a horse's mouth.

Pre-purchase examinations (PPEs) and vettings in Reigate, RH1

Our equine vets are pleased to conduct pre-purchase examinations (PPEs), commonly known as vettings, for both our registered clients and those who are not registered with us.

The PPE follows a recognised five-stage examination process, although not all stages may be completed if the horse fails at an earlier stage. In some instances, a two-stage examination, also known as a 'limited examination', may be requested. For example, this applies to young, unbacked horses or broodmares, and it involves only the first two stages. The vet will provide an opinion based on a restricted set of findings.

A five-stage PPE typically follows these stages:

  • Preliminary examination
  • First walk and trot in hand
  • Ridden exercise phase
  • Period of rest and re-examination
  • Second walk and trot in hand

Additionally, a blood sample is collected for storage. If necessary, supplementary procedures such as digital radiographs and endoscopy can be carried out at an extra cost.

Upon completion of the PPE, a certificate is issued to the purchaser after a discussion with the vet. The certificate outlines any clinical findings and recommendations.

Emergency mobile equine vets in Reigate

Animals can become ill or sustain injuries beyond regular working hours, which is why we offer a complete 24-hour emergency service.

Our after-hours service is delivered by a dedicated team of equine veterinarians with comprehensive training to handle emergencies in horses. Typically, we provide assistance directly to the horse at home, and many emergency cases exhibit swift responses to treatment.

If there is ever a situation where a procedure cannot be carried out on-site, we maintain strong partnerships with equine hospitals and transportation firms in the vicinity. This enables us to promptly arrange referrals for Scintigraphy (Bonescan), Colic Surgery, MRI and CT scans.

Other Equine Services in Surrey

Our horse vets can provide a complete range of services, including:

Services Treating Lameness

Lameness and poor performance

Lameness issues can inflict pain on your horse and cause concern and disruption for you as an owner. Our goal is to identify the cause of the problem and recommend suitable treatment to get your horse back to normal as quickly as possible.

The lameness investigation may involve various procedures, including the examination of your horse's conformation, movement, stride, and limb placement, flexion tests, palpation of the limbs and muscles, examination at walk and trot in hand and on the lunge, ridden examination, nerve or joint blocks, and X-ray or ultrasound.

Services Gastroscopy

Gastroscopy

Equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) is increasingly acknowledged as a common culprit behind various clinical signs, including poor performance, behavioural changes, reduced appetite, lacklustre coat condition, and discomfort during girthing.

All horses face the risk of developing ulcers, with contributing factors such as a high-carbohydrate diet, intense training or competition schedules, and stressors like illness or changes in routine, such as box rest.

Using a gastroscope, we can visually inspect the horse's esophagus, stomach and proximal duodenum to confirm the presence of ulcers. Since ulcer treatment can be costly, a thorough stomach examination through gastroscopy is recommended before initiating any treatment.

Services Diagnostic Imaging

Mobile diagnostic imaging

Surrey Hills Equine employs cutting-edge portable wireless diagnostic imaging tools, including Digital X-ray systems, Ultrasound Scanners, and Video Endoscopy, delivered directly to clients' premises. This innovative approach allows us to provide the convenience of on-site examinations, eliminating the need to transport horses.

Our horse vets may recommend additional diagnostic imaging, whether it is for lameness investigations, pre-purchase examinations (vetting), dental or head-related concerns, or assessments of upper airways for respiratory conditions or Strangles cases.

Services Endoscopy

Endoscopy

Endoscopy is a valuable tool for assessing the respiratory tract, especially in horses facing respiratory issues or exhibiting poor performance.

The procedure involves passing a flexible camera, known as an endoscope, through your horse's nostril, pharynx, larynx, and down the trachea, with the option to examine the guttural pouches.
