Guildford equine dentistry services
Are you looking for a local equine dentist? Regular examination and care for horses' teeth is essential for maintaining their overall health throughout their lives. We provide routine dentistry, advanced dentistry, imaging, and referrals.
Various issues arising in the horse's mouth can lead to a variety of harmful behavioural abnormalities. This is primarily due to the continuous eruption of a horse's teeth throughout its life. It is recommended that every horse undergo a routine dental examination at least once every 12 months. Regular checks give vets the best chance of detecting a problem before it becomes painful enough for the horse to show obvious signs of discomfort.
When a horse begins to exhibit indications of oral discomfort such as quidding, weight loss, uneven rein pressure, or head tossing, the underlying dental issues have typically been developing for an extended period. Addressing these problems later on becomes more expensive and brings increased discomfort to the horse.
Guildford pre-purchase examinations (PPEs)
Our veterinary team is proficient in conducting pre-purchase examinations, otherwise known as vettings, for a diverse range of horses, including those involved in competitions, riding clubs, and schoolmaster ponies.
We take pride in providing personalised advice that suits your specific circumstances and the individual characteristics of the horse under consideration. While we typically recommend five-stage vettings, we also offer two-stage examinations and vettings tailored for insurance purposes. We can also discuss diagnostic imaging, encompassing X-rays, ultrasound scans, or endoscopy of the upper airways.
Our vets can discuss the results after the pre-purchase examination (PPE). This aims to determine if any additional examinations or repetitions are necessary. Subsequently, the vet compiles the PPE certificate, encompassing a report on pertinent clinical findings and medical history.

Other Equine Services in Surrey
Our horse vets can provide a complete range of services, including:
Lameness and poor performance
Lameness issues can inflict pain on your horse and cause concern and disruption for you as an owner. Our goal is to identify the cause of the problem and recommend suitable treatment to get your horse back to normal as quickly as possible.
The lameness investigation may involve various procedures, including the examination of your horse's conformation, movement, stride, and limb placement, flexion tests, palpation of the limbs and muscles, examination at walk and trot in hand and on the lunge, ridden examination, nerve or joint blocks, and X-ray or ultrasound.
Gastroscopy
Equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) is increasingly acknowledged as a common culprit behind various clinical signs, including poor performance, behavioural changes, reduced appetite, lacklustre coat condition, and discomfort during girthing.
All horses face the risk of developing ulcers, with contributing factors such as a high-carbohydrate diet, intense training or competition schedules, and stressors like illness or changes in routine, such as box rest.
Using a gastroscope, we can visually inspect the horse's esophagus, stomach and proximal duodenum to confirm the presence of ulcers. Since ulcer treatment can be costly, a thorough stomach examination through gastroscopy is recommended before initiating any treatment.
Mobile diagnostic imaging
Surrey Hills Equine employs cutting-edge portable wireless diagnostic imaging tools, including Digital X-ray systems, Ultrasound Scanners, and Video Endoscopy, delivered directly to clients' premises. This innovative approach allows us to provide the convenience of on-site examinations, eliminating the need to transport horses.
Our horse vets may recommend additional diagnostic imaging, whether it is for lameness investigations, pre-purchase examinations (vetting), dental or head-related concerns, or assessments of upper airways for respiratory conditions or Strangles cases.
Endoscopy
Endoscopy is a valuable tool for assessing the respiratory tract, especially in horses facing respiratory issues or exhibiting poor performance.
The procedure involves passing a flexible camera, known as an endoscope, through your horse's nostril, pharynx, larynx, and down the trachea, with the option to examine the guttural pouches.
