Highly recommend the team at Surrey Hills Equine. I recently had Corrado out to treat an injury that my horse sustained in the field and have been very impressed with treatment he has received. Corrado takes the time to explain everything that he is doing and why. Leanne and the office staff have been a pleasure to deal with, all of my insurance claims have been handled quickly and efficiently. I can't thank them enough for all that they have done and feel very lucky to have found a great practice.

Finchampstead horse dentist

Are you looking for an equine vet? Our clinicians are highly experienced and dedicated to ensuring the dental health of your horse, pony, or donkey.

Poor dental health is a common issue in equines, often leading to severe pain, chronic discomfort, and diminished performance. Fortunately, equine dentistry has advanced significantly over the past decade, allowing us to better understand and address dental diseases in horses, preventing long-term suffering.

While many horse owners recognise the importance of regular dental checks as part of routine healthcare, the reasons behind these checks are not always fully understood. Unlike human teeth, a horse's teeth continually erupt and wear down through chewing. However, anatomical differences, modern feeding practices, and age-related changes can lead to improper wear, resulting in sharp points, displacements, and overgrowths. Additionally, other dental diseases can develop, causing chronic pain if left untreated.

Regular dental examinations every six to 12 months are crucial for early detection and prevention of these issues. Studies have shown that over 50 per cent of horses suffer from dental disease, which can lead to pain, weight loss, poor performance, behavioural problems, and serious conditions such as colic and infections.

Comprehensive PPEs and horse vettings in Sandhurst, GU17

Our skilled veterinary surgeons offer pre-purchase examinations for both registered and unregistered clients. This thorough, standardised assessment evaluates a horse's suitability for its intended use and generally involves five stages. Sometimes, a two-stage examination may be sufficient, particularly for young or unbacked horses or broodmares.

The examination begins with a preliminary clinical check at rest, where the vet palpates the limbs, listens to the heart and lungs, and examines the eyes using an ophthalmoscope. The horse's microchip is scanned, and its passport is reviewed. Next, the horse is observed walking and trotting in hand on a hard, level surface, including flexion tests and trotting on various surfaces to detect subtle lameness.

The exercise phase, usually performed under saddle, assesses the horse's performance and recovery during work at walk, trot, canter, and possibly gallop. If the horse is unbroken, it may be exercised on a lunge. Following this, the horse is rested, and its behaviour and recovery are observed to identify any stiffness or behavioural issues.

The final stage involves trotting the horse up in hand again to check for any changes or lameness that may have developed. A blood sample is recommended to test for medications or steroids, and additional procedures like limb X-rays, ultrasounds, or endoscopic exams may be carried out if necessary. After completing the examination, the vet will provide a detailed report on the horse's suitability for its intended use.

Other Equine Services in Surrey

Our horse vets can provide a complete range of services, including:

Services Treating Lameness

Lameness and poor performance

Lameness issues can inflict pain on your horse and cause concern and disruption for you as an owner. Our goal is to identify the cause of the problem and recommend suitable treatment to get your horse back to normal as quickly as possible.

The lameness investigation may involve various procedures, including the examination of your horse's conformation, movement, stride, and limb placement, flexion tests, palpation of the limbs and muscles, examination at walk and trot in hand and on the lunge, ridden examination, nerve or joint blocks, and X-ray or ultrasound.

Services Gastroscopy

Gastroscopy

Equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) is increasingly acknowledged as a common culprit behind various clinical signs, including poor performance, behavioural changes, reduced appetite, lacklustre coat condition, and discomfort during girthing.

All horses face the risk of developing ulcers, with contributing factors such as a high-carbohydrate diet, intense training or competition schedules, and stressors like illness or changes in routine, such as box rest.

Using a gastroscope, we can visually inspect the horse's esophagus, stomach and proximal duodenum to confirm the presence of ulcers. Since ulcer treatment can be costly, a thorough stomach examination through gastroscopy is recommended before initiating any treatment.

Services Diagnostic Imaging

Mobile diagnostic imaging

Surrey Hills Equine employs cutting-edge portable wireless diagnostic imaging tools, including Digital X-ray systems, Ultrasound Scanners, and Video Endoscopy, delivered directly to clients' premises. This innovative approach allows us to provide the convenience of on-site examinations, eliminating the need to transport horses.

Our horse vets may recommend additional diagnostic imaging, whether it is for lameness investigations, pre-purchase examinations (vetting), dental or head-related concerns, or assessments of upper airways for respiratory conditions or Strangles cases.

Services Endoscopy

Endoscopy

Endoscopy is a valuable tool for assessing the respiratory tract, especially in horses facing respiratory issues or exhibiting poor performance.

The procedure involves passing a flexible camera, known as an endoscope, through your horse's nostril, pharynx, larynx, and down the trachea, with the option to examine the guttural pouches.
