I have used Corrado for years now and he is fantastic!! He had helped me with my TB who had a fractured splint and a ligament tear and has been nothing but helpful and supportive. Always gives me the best recovery plans and explains things in a way I understand. I wouldn't use any other vet!!

Pre-purchase examinations or PPEs by our horse vets in Leatherhead, KT22

It is highly recommended to have your horse undergo a thorough examination by a qualified veterinarian before purchasing. This examination can reveal any underlying issues, allowing you to make an informed decision before finalising the purchase. Additionally, such examinations can also assess your horse's suitability for insurance purposes.

The five-stage examination for horses encompasses a comprehensive assessment process to evaluate various aspects of the horse's health and fitness. It begins with an examination of vital signs, including heart and lung function, as well as an assessment of the eyes, teeth, and limbs while in the stable before exercise.

Next, the horse is walked and trotted in hand to evaluate its gait, both before and after flexion of the joints. This allows for a closer inspection of any potential lameness or stiffness. Following this, the horse undergoes strenuous exercise, typically under saddle, working on both reins and at various paces. This phase aims to uncover any respiratory or cardiac abnormalities that may only become apparent during exertion.

After the exercise phase, the horse is given a period of rest, during which paperwork is reviewed, and a final check for abnormal lumps or bumps is conducted. Additionally, a blood sample is taken at the time of the examination and stored in a secure laboratory. This precautionary measure allows for investigation into the use of prohibited substances, such as bute, which could potentially affect the outcome of the vetting. If radiographs are deemed necessary as part of the inspection, they are typically taken during this stage.

Finally, the horse is trotted in hand one last time to ensure no issues have arisen during the exercise phase, completing the comprehensive evaluation process.

Other Equine Services in Surrey

Our horse vets can provide a complete range of services, including:

Services Treating Lameness

Lameness and poor performance

Lameness issues can inflict pain on your horse and cause concern and disruption for you as an owner. Our goal is to identify the cause of the problem and recommend suitable treatment to get your horse back to normal as quickly as possible.

The lameness investigation may involve various procedures, including the examination of your horse's conformation, movement, stride, and limb placement, flexion tests, palpation of the limbs and muscles, examination at walk and trot in hand and on the lunge, ridden examination, nerve or joint blocks, and X-ray or ultrasound.

Services Gastroscopy

Gastroscopy

Equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) is increasingly acknowledged as a common culprit behind various clinical signs, including poor performance, behavioural changes, reduced appetite, lacklustre coat condition, and discomfort during girthing.

All horses face the risk of developing ulcers, with contributing factors such as a high-carbohydrate diet, intense training or competition schedules, and stressors like illness or changes in routine, such as box rest.

Using a gastroscope, we can visually inspect the horse's esophagus, stomach and proximal duodenum to confirm the presence of ulcers. Since ulcer treatment can be costly, a thorough stomach examination through gastroscopy is recommended before initiating any treatment.

Services Diagnostic Imaging

Mobile diagnostic imaging

Surrey Hills Equine employs cutting-edge portable wireless diagnostic imaging tools, including Digital X-ray systems, Ultrasound Scanners, and Video Endoscopy, delivered directly to clients' premises. This innovative approach allows us to provide the convenience of on-site examinations, eliminating the need to transport horses.

Our horse vets may recommend additional diagnostic imaging, whether it is for lameness investigations, pre-purchase examinations (vetting), dental or head-related concerns, or assessments of upper airways for respiratory conditions or Strangles cases.

Services Endoscopy

Endoscopy

Endoscopy is a valuable tool for assessing the respiratory tract, especially in horses facing respiratory issues or exhibiting poor performance.

The procedure involves passing a flexible camera, known as an endoscope, through your horse's nostril, pharynx, larynx, and down the trachea, with the option to examine the guttural pouches.
